Old Salem

Historic Bethabara Park
Today's Bethabara evokes this era. A National Historic Landmark, this 1753 site of the German-speaking, Protestant settlement nestles in a picturesque, wooded 183-acre wildlife preserve with 126 species of birds along with the Bethabara Park Museum which offers, hand-crafted Moravian, colonial, and natural history items. Historic Bethabara Park is an imaginative journey to the Carolina backcountry of nearly 250 years ago. A small group of Moravians settled this religious village and trade center in an 18th-century wilderness, full of bears, wolves, Indians and outlaws. Begin your visit to Winston-Salem at the place where it all began.
The museum features a unique, restored and furnished 1788 church, archaeological ruins, Visitor Center with introductory video, exhibits and tours with costumed guides, as well as a reconstructed village, a French and Indian War fort and colonial and medical gardens.
Explore 20 miles of nature trails, go to the mill site, and observe wildlife from two observation docks over the beaver pond. Tanglewood Park
Tanglewood Park is probably best known to area visitors for its annual Festival of Lights during the holiday season but there is so much more to do year round. There's the Arboretum and Fragrance Garden, two-eighteen hole championship and one par-3 golf courses, horse back riding, ten lighted tennis courts, paddleboats, canoes and so much more.
Each year in Mid-November, Tanglewood transforms its rolling countryside into a winter wonderland of giant snowflakes and whimsical scenes. After more than twelve seasons, Tanglewood's Festival of Lights continues to be one of the largest and most spectacular light shows in the southeast. From storybook scenes to Holiday themes, over one hundred displays with nearly a million lights fill Tanglewood Park with the entire splendor and joy of the Holiday season. While you are there, enjoy some last minute holiday shopping and an old fashioned marshmallow roasting. The Festival of Lights is open nightly from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. for a nominal cost.
